FAQ (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)

Q1 - I still have a Heathkit course and final exam that I purchased X years ago. Will Heathkit still accept the exam for grading and credit?

Yes, Heathkit ILPs do not expire. We will grade your test and if you achieve a passing score, we will issue a certificate with the number of CEUs assigned to the course. You must use the answer sheet and exam from the original exam pack. We will not accept a photocopy of the answer sheet.

Q2 - Is the electronics course that I purchased X years ago still applicable?

The Fundamental Electronics series, as the names implies, is fundamental in nature. The fundamentals do not change. Therefore these courses are still applicable.

Q3 - I have several parts missing from the parts pack. Can I order just the parts pack for my ILP?

ILPs do not have a single model number for the parts pack included in the course. However, each individual part has a part number, (see Parts List) that you can use to order replacements for missing parts.

Q4 - I have a X year old child who seems interested in electronics. Are your ILPs suitable for him/her?

It is not unusual for parents to purchase Heathkit ILPs for a minor child. However, only you, the parent, can make that determination for your child. The following information should prove helpful in making your decision. The text material is written to an 8th grade reading level. The hands-on exercises require soldering, the use of test equipment, a Heathkit trainer and beginning in the second course an oscilloscope. Therefore, we recommend adult supervision for the hands-on portion of the course.

Q5 - I want to learn electronics. Which course should I start with?

The answer depends on what you intend to accomplish. If you want an overview of electronics and electricity, choose Concepts of Electricity or Concepts of Electronics. If you want to learn Electronics to the technician level you need the analog series in the following order: DC, AC, Semiconductors, Electronic Circuits, Digital Techniques, and Microprocessors.

Q6 - How long does it take to complete an ILP course?

As a general rule you should expect to spend 10-15 hours per CEU assigned to the selected course. For example, Electronic Circuits has been assigned 4.0 CEUs. Expect to spend 40 to 60 hours of reading, calculating, taking quizzes, and performing hands-on exercises. ILPs are self-paced courses with no minimum or maximum time limit.

Q7 - What is a CEU? How is it used?

A CEU (Continuing Education Unit) is a non-college associated unit of credit awarded for completion of approved self-study programs and professional seminars. Each CEU represents a minimum of 10 hours of training with a program approved by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training. Often employers require continued study in a related field, as a condition for advancement or sometimes for continued employment. In these cases, the CEU is often accepted as proof that the employee has obtained the required training.
